Building the Empire

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

I never thought it would be as easy to do what I did.

But it was. A quick exchange of emails and then it was done. Mr Shaftebotham was quite happy for us to go back early. Then I had the confirmation email from Alex ap Iorwerth.

Hi Juliet,

Just to confirm that I’ll be back at school a day early on the 31st. The other prefects will be back on the 1st. It’s a really good idea of yours for us both to meet up first! We’ll get loads done, then we can hold a prefects meeting on the 1st. I’ll arrive about 11am.

See you then!

Alex

I arrived back at school in my own car, a smart Audi Quattro that Papa had bought for me. In the car behind were Perkins, our chauffeur and James, one of the house servants. Packing Ponderings

Packing listI sat down at my desk, opened up my laptop, and then nipped off to fetch a glass of milk whilst it booted up. On my return I did the old familiar commands… Start – My Documents – Packing Lists. Copying the last file in there (Summer 08) I pasted it back into the folder and renamed it to Winter 08. Then a simple double click to open and… hey presto. Pippa’s packing list for the upcoming term.

I’ve always been a bit of a list freak. Not only does it help with organisation, but there’s a small but warming sense of satisfaction as things get ticked off. It’s almost like watching achievement happen, right in front of my eyes. Plus, having created one of these each term for the last five and a half years (ever since I forgot to pack Poppet, my beloved toy rabbit, for the first term at Lowewood and vowed never to repeat either the mistake, or the sleepless nights, again) it’s like my own little archive of the things that mattered to me throughout my time at school.

Mistakes with Identity

Three girls on the townWe were having a ball!

It was the first time the olds had let me stay in London without them, and I think it was the same for Cassie. We didn’t really advertise this fact to our hostess - Chloe Lansbury being the sort of cool London chick who would find our greenness way too amusing if we let on - but the excitement was infectious. It was also the last fling for all of us before starting sixth form next week and we were determined to make the most of it.

Cassie and I shared a lovely spare room at Chloe’s parents’ place in Putney, and you could even just about see the Thames from the top floor! This was good practice anyway, since we had learnt last week, to our delight, that we would indeed be room mates in Dashwood when we returned! We’d so hoped they’d leave us together. It was considerably better news than the other missive I’d received from Miss Bellend, that’s for sure. As I’d told the other girls gloomily, it was exactly what I’d been dreading…
